Captain America’s Absolute Worst Costume is Called Out By Marvel

Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Marvels #9

Fans were assuredly more than happy to forget about Captain America’s absolute worst costume after he hung up the cape and deep-v for good, but Marvel Comics just called out the suit and simultaneously reminded readers just how terrible it is. When Steve Rogers became disillusioned with the idea of American values and questioned what the moniker ‘Captain America’ really meant, he gave up the mantle and became the hero without a country, Nomad. While this evolution for the character was a unique and creative development, the costume Captain America chose to don was just awful.

In The Marvels #9 Kurt Busiek and Yildiray Cinar, readers are taken on a trip back in time to when Steve Rogers was known as Nomad. In the issue, Nomad is fighting alongside the Avengers during the Vietnam War during which time he was Nomad. Even though he is no longer Captain America, Nomad tries to take charge of the other Avengers, but half-way through the battle, Nomad is checked by another longtime Avenger.

As Nomad is trying to shout orders to the other heroes, Hawkeye steps in and tells him, “Hey, hey, Nomad– Remember, you’re not an Avenger, not in that outfit, anyway.” Hawkeye steps in as proxy for Marvel Comics and its fans by telling Captain America that the Nomad suit is terrible and no one sees him as an authority figure while he wears it. The reason the costume is regarded as Captain America’s worst is because of the overall aesthetic and its stark contrast to Cap’s original suit. The Nomad outfit is black and gold and is cut in a way where Steve Rogers’ chest and stomach are completely exposed. The suit was also equipped with a mask that only covers Steve’s eyes, leaving his hair and the majority of his face exposed as well, and while it isn’t worn here, the original suit also came with a long, flowing cape.

Steve Rogers made his first appearance as Nomad in Captain America #180 by Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema. After uncovering the truth that the leader behind a terrorist organization known as Secret Empire was actually a high-ranking United States government official, Captain America decided he could no longer represent a country that was capable of falling into that kind of corruption. His run as Nomad was fairly short-lived, however, as he wore the stars and stripes once again to face-off against the villainous Red Skull, and from that point on he never put the Nomad suit on again, that is, until this very issue.

While the suit itself is not practical, tactical, or aesthetically pleasing, it is regarded as Steve’s worst suit because it simply does not capture who he is as a hero. Steve Rogers is Captain America, someone who represents the best of humanity’s values. While the United States is not free from corruption, Captain America is and that vision of freedom, justice, and hope is something that inspires everyone who sees him. The Nomad suit represents nothing and makes Marvel’s most heroic Avenger look like a public domain character. Captain America’s absolute worst costume is called out by Marvel, not just because it looks bad, but because Steve Rogers isn’t himself when he is Nomad.
