Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Death on the Nile will begin streaming this month. Based on the 1937 novel by Agatha Christie, Death on the Nile stars Branagh as detective Hercule Poirot, a recurring character in the author's series of mystery books. Branagh first portrayed the character in 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, again based on a Christie novel, which had been previously adapted in 1974. Death on the Nile was also previously adapted in 1978 with Peter Ustinov and Mia Farrow.
The new adaptation stars (along with Branagh) Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright. Death on the Nile was adapted by Michael Green and is produced and directed by Branagh. The all-star ensemble takes place aboard a river steamer in Egypt during a couple's lavish honeymoon with friends and family, quickly turning to murder and mystery, which only the Belgian sleuth Poirot can solve.
20th Century Studios’ has now set a streaming date release for Death on the Nile, which is set for March 29 on HBO Max in the U.S., the same day as Hulu. The film was a theatrical disappointment, pulling in just $116 million worldwide, compared to 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, which made three times that with $352 million worldwide. Shot in 2019 and delayed multiple times over production issues and the pandemic, Death on the Nile appeared to suffer from the recurring setbacks and middling reviews, but may well find new life on streaming and home video.
While Death on the Nile wasn't the commercial success that Murder on the Orient Express was, 20th Century Studios remains steadfast in continuing the franchise with Branagh involved. Screenwriter Michael Green has already adapted another Christie novel and Branagh is expected back to both direct and star as Poirot. The third film in the series is said to be from one of Christie's lesser-known novels and "a pretty daring shift in genre and in tone," taking place in post-war Venice.
Branagh is riding high off of his latest effort Belfast, for which he's also been nominated for Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay at the 2022 Oscars. So, while Death on the Nile wasn't a massive hit, Branagh's caliber is still unmistakable, which is enough to buy a third shot at keeping the Christie/Poirot franchise alive. The actor will next be seen in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, as well as portraying the current UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the pandemic-themed series This Sceptred Isle.
