Dune 2 Will Set Up A Full Trilogy (& Maybe More Movies After)

Dune: Part Two will lay the foundation for a full trilogy and possibly even more, according to Dune screenwriter Jon Spaiths. Visionary director Denis Villeneuve brought Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel to life this past fall with a script by himself, Spaiths, and Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. Villeneuve is the second director to bring Dune to the big screen after David Lynch in 1984, though the former's version fared much better, as the second part of his adaptation was greenlit shortly after the film premiered in theaters and on HBO Max to rave reviews and a formidable box office haul.

Storywise, Dune's principal focus is the war over the deadly and inhospitable desert planet of Arrakis due to its plentiful supply of a valuable resource known as Spice. The young protagonist, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), and his family are thrust into this conflict when his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac), is bestowed with the stewardship of Arrakis. As the first film in a two-part adaptation, a few actors such as Zendaya and Dave Bautista agreed to smaller roles in Dune knowing their characters, Chani and Glossu Rabban, would see more screen time in the sequel. In recent days, Dune: Part Two began filling out its cast with Florence Pugh and Austin Butler in major roles.

Now, in an interview with The Playlist, Spaiths shed some more light on Dune: Part Two, saying straightforward that the sequel will lay the groundwork for a potential third movie. The second movie, slated for October 20, 2023, will cover the second half of the book, though there is a sequel novel by Herbert, The Messiah of Dune, which Spaiths and Villeneuve are absolutely open to adapting as well. Read what Spaiths had to say below:

Denis has talked seriously about making [Dune Messiah] as well, as a conclusion of the trilogy. Dune Messiah is a very interesting book, which in some ways, deconstructs Dune and plays as a cautionary tale, even more than Dune does, about the dangers of blending religion and politics, the hazards of following charismatic leaders and the dangerous struggle that’s always alive between the individual and institutions.

There are a few tantalizing strands that lead into the future and suggest that we might not be done in this universe, despite the fact that the ending of Dune as a novel, which will be the ending of the second film, is a very satisfying conclusion.

At the end of Dune, Chani's character proclaims, “This is only the beginning,” which is meant to tease Paul's journey with the Fremen for Part Two, though it could also apply to the Dune franchise itself. At one point, Spaiths was set to serve as showrunner for the HBO Max spinoff, Dune: The Sisterhood, though he dropped out of the series centered on the Bene Gesserit to focus on writing Dune: Part Two, but that wasn't the sole reason. Now, Spaiths says he's been tasked with “investigating other cinematic prospects in the Dune universe,” suggesting Warner Bros. has interest in a third movie or other spinoffs.

The fact that WB has hopes of turning Dune into a larger franchise is hardly a surprising revelation. Villeneuve shares Spaiths' interest in making a third movie based on Dune Messiah and if Dune: Part Two does well at the box office, it has a good chance of happening. But beyond a trilogy, Hebert wrote four more Dune novels which present plenty of opportunities to tell even more stories on the small and big screens.
