A piece of fan art for The Batman pitches a sequel idea that teams up Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight with his own version of Robin with adorable results. The release of The Batman has largely been regarded as worth the wait by fans who are touting Matt Reeves’ recent reboot as the most faithful adaptation of the Batman comics to date. The film has received lavish praise from critics and is bringing in a healthy box office take from its opening weekend, meaning Reeves’ hopeful plans for the future are one step closer to reality.
Pattinson himself has been praised as potentially the best Batman yet, with his emotionally distant Dark Knight capturing the essence of the character for fans while also being a suitable update for the modern setting. With The Batman only covering the character in his second year as a bonafide crime fighter, there are plenty of story arcs and characters from the comics for Reeves and Pattinson to tackle going forward. From potential future villains, such as The Joker and Mr. Freeze, to an introduction of Superman, it seems like anything could be on the cards for the next installment of the new Batman film series.
Artist, @niteween, posted a piece of fan art to their Twitter account imagining a future team up of Pattinson’s Batman with his own version of Robin in The Batman 2. The artist posted two adorable drawings of the traditionally chirpier Robin with Pattinson’s grungy Bruce Wayne, with one seeing Bruce give Robin a piggyback ride while the other has the Boy Wonder demonstrating his gymnastic skills while pestering the Dark Knight for lunch. If there was any doubt as to which version of Robin this is supposed to be, the artist follows up with a tweet claiming that they are trying to "manifest little Dick Grayson." The piece is undeniably cute, and the juxtaposition of a bright, colorful Robin against such a moody, but ultimately loving, Batman is a great contrast adapted straight from the comics. The introduction of Robin into a sequel for The Batman would be a solid addition and even play into Bruce Wayne’s arc of evolving Batman into a symbol of hope rather than fear by adopting an orphan who suffered the same tragedy he had to endure. Pattinson himself has stated that he is eager to include Robin in a sequel but that the character must be a young boy as per his original comic book counterpart.
Robin himself has not been featured in a live-action film since 1997, with subsequent reboots omitting the character. It seems as though there is a sketchiness around the character’s image that filmmakers are reluctant to handle, which Pattinson himself addressed in the aforementioned interview saying "people are so scared of [Robin]." This may be because of how tied up the character is in the campier adaptations of Batman, such as Batman & Robin and the Adam West TV series, and after three gritty reboots of the Batman film franchise in a row, it’s clear that producers have aimed to steer clear of adapting Bruce’s kid sidekick in a serious setting. As such, there seems to have been a concerted effort to re-engineer the character to be darker, whether through killing him off-screen in Batman V Superman or having him be a considerably angrier young man in Titans. This fan art for The Batman is hopeful that Reeves’ sequel wouldn’t be afraid to make Robin the optimistic, light-hearted character from the comics that not only contrasts with the Dark Knight but inspires him to be a more optimistic hero.
