Star Trek: Picard may have just explained its opening Borg attack. The first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard season 2 have certainly been a rollercoaster ride. Season 2, episode 1 plunged the entire galaxy into crisis when Jean-Luc Picard was called upon to investigate a mysterious anomaly — which turned out to be of Borg origin.
By the end of the Picard season 2 episode, an entire Starfleet armada had been compromised and Picard was forced to trigger the self-destruct on the USS Stargazer in a desperate attempt to stop the Borg Queen who had taken the ship's bridge. He was rescued by the intervention of Q, who claimed he'd decided to check in on Jean-Luc Picard and simply looked for the nearest explosion, and who plunged Picard and his closest friends into a dystopian alternate timeline. Right now, the mystery of this new Borg invasion — not to mention the surprising abilities wielded by this upgraded Borg Queen — have taken a back seat to a desperate attempt to correct history.
But Star Trek: Picard season 2, episode 2 may already have hinted at the real reason for the Borg attack. In this episode, Picard and his team seek the help of the Borg Queen, because apparently, she is time-sensitive enough to know history has been broken; indeed, Seven-of-Nine seems to suggest Borg Queens are able to communicate with one another across the multiverse, although presumably on a basic level rather than by sharing detailed strategic knowledge. If this is the case, it's entirely possible the Borg Queen who sought out Picard and attacked the Stargazer did so because she had a presentiment of the chaos about to be unleashed — which would be tremendously ironic, because she seems to have been the one who brought the crew together so they would all be chosen by Q in the first place.
Star Trek: Picard season 2 is clearly focused on the theme of time travel. Star Trek's time travel has never been entirely consistent; there have been too many writers across too many shows (although some tie-in books have attempted to draw the threads together into a sort of unified theory of time travel). The main focus of Star Trek: Picard appears to lie on the concept of history being changeable, with the present altered because of changes made to the past. If this theory is correct, though, there's a second layer of time travel theory going on here: a time loop. The Borg Queen's actions drew Picard and his team to the USS Stargazer, and shaped Q's intervention, which created the temporal anomaly that drove the Borg Queen into action in the first place.
Curiously, Star Trek: Picard season 2, episode 1 actually hinted that the original Borg Queen had time traveled in the first place. The show referenced both tachyons and Hawking Radiation, the former traditionally associated with time travel in Star Trek and the latter tied to real-world models of temporal mechanics. That Borg Queen could even have originated in another dimension, traveling to this one in an attempt to help her counterpart out. Hopefully, it won't be long before Star Trek: Picard drops some more clues.
