A new Star Wars board game is set to release this summer, and it will allow players to wield the power of the Dark Side across virtually every era featured in the Star Wars franchise. Board game publisher Ravensburger is well-known for its popular Disney Villainous franchise, which in turn has spawned a spin-off centered around Marvel Comics. Funko Games has also explored iconic Disney-owned properties in board game form over the past few years, with its most recent take on the Star Wars franchise being a Boba Fett-themed expansion of its popular It’s Wild card game.
Meanwhile, Star Wars fans have had plenty of exciting news when it comes to video games over the past few years. In addition to next month’s Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Ubisoft recently revealed that it is partnering with Disney to make an open-world Star Wars game, and Detroit: Become Human publisher Quantic Dream recently unveiled the High Republic-era Star Wars: Eclipse during last December’s The Game Awards 2021 livestream event. EA and Respawn Entertainment have also confirmed that a sequel to 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is on the way, and fans of the classic Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic were greeted by the reveal of a current-gen remake at the beginning of September's PlayStation Showcase. Now, tabletop Star Wars fans have something sinister on the horizon for later this year.
Earlier today, Ravensburger announced a new spin-off to its Villainous series, one that will hit stores in August. Titled Star Wars (Power of the Dark Side) Villainous, this game will put players in the role of legendary baddies from across all eras of the Star Wars franchise, including Original Trilogy villain Darth Vader, Star Wars: Clone Wars enemy Asajj Ventress, Prequel-Era antagonist General Grievous, Sequel generation antihero Kylo Ren, and even The Mandalorian’s smug Imperial general Moff Gideon. Each one comes with their own special game piece, special abilities, and objectives that players need to complete. Star Wars Villainous is also adding Vehicle Cards to the line’s strategic gameplay, which will feature a unique set of rules for iconic Star Wars transports like the Millennium Falcon. Ravensburger International Category Manager Florian Baldenhofer noted that fans have been asking for a Star Wars-themed Villainous game for years during today’s press release, and Art Director Jake Breish described how capturing Star Wars’ “battle-worn aesthetic” in the game pieces was an important goal for his team. Star Wars Villainous is listed as being for two to four players ages 10 and up.
Taking the role of a Dark Side-aligned Sith Lord or Imperial soldier has always been a popular staple in Star Wars games, as titles like Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic and Star Wars: Dark Forces II let players bend their Force-wielding characters toward the Dark Side and utilize powerful Sith techniques like Force Lightning. Likewise, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II have put their protagonists on the side of the Galactic Empire at first, though Starkiller and Iden Versio ultimately defect to the side of good by the end.
Now, board game fans will be able to unleash the power of the Dark Side in a new way thanks to Star Wars Villainous, which will expand Ravensburger’s Villainous line and put players in the roles of some of the Star Wars universe’s most legendary antagonists. Star Wars Villainous will launch sometime this August, with more information to be revealed as the release draws near.
