In a recent announcement by Marvel Comics it was revealed that the newest "Destiny of X" era for the X-Men will include... Robot X-Men?! While Marvel has released zero details about who these Robot X-Men will be, or who made them, clearly this is going to make the X-Men even cooler. There are several theories as to where they could come from, which all stem from the exciting developments on the island nation of Krakoa over the past several months.
The "Destiny of X" era is spinning directly out of the disastrous Inferno event, which turned the mutant government and status quo on its head when it exiled Moira X, and the ongoing X-Lives/X-Deaths of Wolverine which focuses on Moira attempting to take down the mutants while Wolverine tries to save them on an adventure through time. The new era will see several new series such as Knights of X, Immortal X-Men, and Legion of X, but so far there has been no solicit information indicating that Robot X-Men are on the move. In the Krakoan Age sentient machines are one of the X-Men's biggest, most existential threats, with many of Moira's past lives having ended with the creation of the AI Nimrod and the rise of Human-Machine partnerships.
The announcement by Marvel had this to say about the upcoming "Destiny of X" releases:
"Now that Moira MacTaggert’s sinister machinations have been stopped and Destiny is rightfully restored, a new era is at hand for all Krakoa’s residents, even as old threats resurface. DESTINY OF X will pit our merry mutants against the likes of Meryln, Madelyne Pryor the Goblin Queen, and… the Robot X-Men?! And what does Deadpool have to do with this?"
One of the big questions this quote doesn't answer is whether Deadpool is involved specifically with the Robot X-Men, or if he is generally involved in "Destiny of X." We already know Wade will be be appearing in this new era since he shows up in the teaser image for "Destiny of X," but he also is in a cover with Logan in the first Wolverine issue after X-Lives/X-Deaths of Wolverine, indicating Logan could also be involved with the Robot X-Men! With cybernetic plots taking place in X-Lives/X-Deaths of Wolverine, the regular X-Men series, and X-Force, there are truly so many possibilities for how the Robot X-Men are going to show up on the page.
The end of X-Lives/X-Deaths of Wolverine will see Logan returning to X-Force, the X-Men team he is most closely associated with in the current era, and working with the strike squad to take on an internal threat: a sentient version of Xavier's Cerebro machine named Cerebrax. This is one possible way that the Robot X-Men could come into being, perhaps Cerebrax will create robotic versions of the team to fight on its side? Next, there is the overarching plot of the anti-mutant scientific agency Orchis, which has been collecting the corpses of X-Men (who are then resurrected of course) and it has been shown that they are compiling genetic profiles on them and harvesting their bodies. Maybe Orchis is making their own machine-mutant hybrids to continue their mission. And finally there is the current ongoing plot with Omega Wolverine in X-Deaths of Wolverine, a Phalanx-infested Logan from the far future sent back in time to prevent Moira X from creating the Phalanx-bred human-machine supremacist state... so perhaps we will be seeing more of these cybernetic future X-Men in the coming months.
With so many possible theories as to how the Robot X-Men will come into being, and whether they will be friend or foe, the future of the mutants is both exciting and terrifying. Robots are, of course, incredibly cool, and Marvel often has awesome robotic designs in its comics, so regardless of how it happens, fan can rest assured that the Robot X-Men will be amazingly cool.
