Encanto: Antonio Was Secretly Helping Mirabel All Along - Theory Explained

In Disney's Encanto, Antonio has the power to communicate with animals, and he may have been secretly helping Mirabel all along. Disney's Encanto introduces the magical Madrigals, a Colombian family with special powers to help their community. For instance, Antonio Madrigal (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) can communicate with animals, allowing him to make even the fiercest jungle dwellers his friends. Additionally, Bruno (John Leguizamo) has the power to see the future. Still, he goes into hiding after having a dark vision about his niece Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), who doesn't receive a magical gift. However, Mirabel's lack of gifts drives her to determine why the Madrigal miracle and their magical house start to fall apart.

Encanto has inspired several different fan theories to explain the film's mysteries. Mirabel's lack of magical gifts is often a topic of the theories, with fans speculating why the young Madrigal didn't have extraordinary power. However, Jared Bush, one of the film's directors, debunked the most popular Encanto theory about Mirabel, which was that she sabotaged her own gift. Unfortunately, the film doesn't fully explain the Madrigals' magic, leaving fans to fill in the blanks about the truth behind the family's miracle.

Antonio and Mirabel have a close relationship in Encanto, and the former may have helped his older cousin the whole time. According to a fan theory (via Reddit), Antonio watched Mirabel from behind the scenes and helped her discover the problem with the Madrigal miracle. The theory points out Mirabel's many interactions with animals throughout the film. For example, a bird comes along with Mirabel when she enters Bruno's room, and coatis piece together the pieces of Bruno's shattered vision that Mirabel collects. Additionally, the rats ultimately lead Antonio to Bruno Madrigal's room, where he finds Mirabel and offers up his bedroom as a place for Bruno to have another vision. Mirabel has a lot of interactions with animals throughout the movie, and Antonio could've secretly directed them all.

Encanto gives enough evidence to imply that Antonio was helping Mirabel. The pair have a special relationship in the film, and Mirabel even gives Antonio a toy animal ahead of his gifting ceremony, foreshadowing her cousin's ability to communicate with animals. Mirabel also helps Antonio walk up to receive his magical gift, so it seems logical that he'd be there to help her on her journey as well. Mirabel has several unexplained interactions with animals throughout the film, including the bird that somehow arrives in Bruno's cave and the coatis oddly piecing together Bruno's dark vision puzzle themselves. If Antonio were directing these animals, the moments would make more sense in the film.

Just because the theory makes sense, it doesn't mean it's canon. After all, the Encanto director already debunked a popular theory claiming Mirabel sabotaged her own gift, so even the most well-supported theories can't be taken as fact. Furthermore, animals are an essential part of the biodiversity in Colombia, so they were always going to be an important part of Encanto, whether Antonio was in the story or not. Still, it's nice for viewers to think that Mirabel wasn't truly alone, and it may finally explain why the coatis were so interested in piecing together Bruno's vision puzzle.
