Sarah Drew has revealed that she hasn't ruled out the potential of returning as Dr. April Kepner in Grey's Anatomy. The show, which was created by Shonda Rhimes, has surpassed ER in becoming the longest-running medical drama on TV and has helped to propel the career of several series regulars including the likes of Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, and Katherine Heigl. The show has resonated enough with fans that it's received several Grey's Anatomy spin-offs, including Private Practice, Station 19, and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team.
Drew first appeared in Grey's Anatomy's season 6 as the peppy doctor and devoted Christian. She would go on to become a series regular in season 7. In 2018, it was announced Drew would be leaving the show. With Kepner's turbulent romantic storylines finally resolved, the character left Grey's Anatomy on a high. While her character wasn't the most liked by audiences when she first joined the cast, April was a complex addition to Grey's Anatomy nonetheless.
Speaking to ET about her upcoming Lifetime film, Stolen by Their Father, Drew discussed whether she would be open to the possibility of a return to Grey's Anatomy in future seasons. Drew had previously made an appearance in season 17. She opens up about the closure that this brought April, and her experience working on Grey's Anatomy that has given the show a special place in her heart. Check out what she had to say below:
"It was a beautiful experience. It felt so warm, welcoming. It felt like a full-circle moment of closing my story in a way that I didn't honestly know I needed. So Grey's Anatomy will always have my heart. They will always be my family, so I never rule that stuff out."
Since her time on Grey's Anatomy, Drew has starred in several Christmas romance movies and was cast as Cagney in a reboot pilot of Cagney and Lacey alongside Michelle Hurd, although the full series didn't end up getting greenlit. Her latest project, Stolen by Their Father, is a thriller based on Lizbeth Meredith's memoir Piece of Me: Rescuing My Kidnapped Daughters. The film will see Drew portraying Meredith as she fights to rescue her kidnapped children.
Although Dr. Kepner initially had mixed reactions from Grey's Anatomy fans, some would be sure to enjoy her return if Drew was to come back to the show. While she might have made some choices that made people love to hate her, April Kepner still had her redeeming moments, too. Regardless of how fans felt, Drew seems to have had a joyous time working on Grey's Anatomy, and was beloved enough to have had as long a run on the series as she did. However, since Drew has said she's happy with the closure her character was given on the show, it begs the question as to whether it would be necessary.
