Will Smith's mom, Carolyn Smith, commented on her son slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. While the Oscars always attempt to be entertaining and generate conversation, Sunday night's event had an unscripted moment where Smith took to the stage and slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia. The moment has stirred up a great deal of controversy online, with most viewers (and some celebrities) criticizing Smith and his angry outburst, while others defended the actor for sticking up for his wife.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences issued an official statement, condemning Smith's actions and vowing an investigation into the incident. While the actor remained quiet for most of the day, Smith posted an apology to his Instagram account at night, apologizing to Rock, the Academy, attendees, and viewers of the show for his outburst. He says he is "embarrassed" by the incident and calls his behavior "unacceptable and inexcusable."

In a new interview with 6abc Action News, Smith's mother reacts to her son's outburst, saying she's never seen him do anything like that before. Carolyn Smith explains that the incident was surprising because Will has always been "a very even, people person." Check out Mrs. Smith's full comment below:

"He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I've never seen him do that."

Carolyn Smith's reaction comes after Jaden Smith, Will's son, expressed support immediately following the incident, simply Tweeting out, "And that's how we do it." Carolyn went on, however, to say that she's had conversations with Will and that it "broke [her] heart listening to the things he's said he had to go through to get to where he is." Carolyn doesn't detail the specific things Will has gone through, but it could have something to do with his marriage struggles with Jada, which the couple has been open about on their talk show, The Red Table Talk. Regardless of his struggles, Carolyn says, "I am proud of him being him."

Smith has been in the public eye for most of his adult life, but the incident at Sunday night's Oscars is the first time the actor has appeared to lose control in a big way. Many have pointed out that Smith seems to laugh at Rock's joke for a brief moment before seeing Jada's reaction and storming the stage. Considering the public knowledge regarding Smith's tumultuous relationship with Jada, it seems that something going on in Smith's personal life might have played a part in his extreme reaction. It remains to be seen what disciplinary action Smith will face for his behavior. Still, Carolyn's comments suggest that the Oscars event was an isolated incident and that it does not indicate her son's true colors.
